italian market.

armando corona, working one of the many vegetable tables in philly's italian market, had smiles but no answers for me when i began speaking with him. still smiling, then knodding his head towards a man working the other side of the table, his boss was only able to tell me armando has been working here for two years.

adam (left) and max (right) cramer live a few blocks from the market and say they come here almost everyday. adam tickeled max as he picked him up to sit on the bumper and answered "what really makes it here is the people."

waiting outside butchers cafe, hyiunjung hong, is in line to eat brunch at the end of the market. she said she would only be in philadelphia for two weeks to visit her sister and when asked about the market, she thought it was "very nice."

james hall is a market frequent, and comes every week to stock up on fresh groceries. while he's here, he figures he might as well get a good lunch, "they have the best pork sandwiches at di bruno's up the way. "

"bonnie" (affectionately called "bon bon") loves to come to the italian market through out the week. while she had little to say, she was more than willing to demonstrate her favorite part about the market- jumping up on the tables and pretending she's for sale.

"are you registered to vote in the city of philadelphia?" mary reinhart asked abruptly. working to get signatures for the organization for casino free philly, mary was unable to tell me what she liked about the market because today was her first day posted with her petition.

mike ferraido has lived in south philly all his life and lives a block from the deli shop he works in. his favorite and worst part of the market is that "it's never really quiet around here."

shown has been helping his dad with his produce stand for a few years but has lived in philly his whole life. he didn't really have a favorite part of the market, but was eager to offer me a free tomato for talking to him.

natalie zigon (though not a stranger to me, but a stranger to the market) was excited to come down for her first time this sunday morning. she had yet to explore much, but told me she was "excited to get some sausages and meatballs to bring home and cook for dinner."

"two years" was all oscar could tell me about his experiences at the italian market. when asked if he lived in the area, he smiled, knodded, sipped his coffee, and looked up and smiled again at me.

ross bellenoit (left) said he used to live a few streets away, but now just returns to the market every week to "grab coffee." another philly native, ivan funk says the very best part of the market is "gleaners, definatly gleaners"- a relaxed coffee shop that he likes coming to when he has laundry to do, or nothing to do.

john didn't have much to say as he smoked his cigarette outside of a local bar at noon. originally from the bronx, john made the move four years back and now his favorite part of the area is the restaurant vil dirome.
